This item is an extremely rare test model with a tag clearly marked “EXPERIMENTAL TEST SAMPLE / AERO MEDICAL LABORATORY.”The Aero Medical Laboratory was an institution dedicated to researching and testing Air Force pilots’ gear, cold-weather performance, and comfort during wear; flight suits were subjected to repeated testing by combat units and research institutions prior to official adoption. These jackets were prioritized for distribution to Air Force test pilots and ace pilots to evaluate their effectiveness.

The B-15 series was adopted as the U.S. Air Force’s flagship flight jacket from the end of World War II onward. After undergoing improvements from the B-15C to the B-15D, it eventually evolved into the MA-1, which is often considered the definitive form of the nylon flight jacket.This item is a highly significant artifact from that transitional period; it is a specimen that was manufactured and tested in preparation for the completion of the B-15D, the final model in the B-15 series.

Its most notable feature is the details that differ from the officially adopted model.

While most B-15D jackets feature CROWN zippers, this item is equipped with a TALON main zipper—an exceptionally sturdy zipper. This specification change is a fascinating indication that materials and components from multiple manufacturers were compared and evaluated during the testing phase.These characteristics, unique to a test sample, further enhance its value as a collector’s item.

A leather name tag remains on the chest; although it shows some signs of deterioration due to age, it strongly preserves the atmosphere of the era. Details such as the shearling collar, cigarette pocket, and pen holder—which were later carried over to the B-15D—are also evident, allowing you to fully appreciate the unique charm of a prototype.

While there are signs of wear and light discoloration from age throughout the jacket, the fabric retains sufficient body, and the ribbing is in relatively good condition. The lining shows no major damage, and the zipper operates smoothly. Considering its unique nature as a test sample, it is in exceptionally good condition.

Although the size is not indicated on the tag, based on actual measurements, it is estimated to be equivalent to LARGE to XL. Its generous fit, which makes it easy to wear even today, is another appealing feature.
