The N-2B, a classic flight jacket designed for extremely cold climates, was adopted by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s as it entered the full-fledged jet age. This jacket is size MEDIUM.
The N-2B evolved from the earlier N-2A, which featured the classic Air Force Blue, and symbolizes the era from the mid-1950s when USAF flight wear transitioned from blue to sage green.Its appeal lies in its highly refined design—featuring a short-cut body, thick cold-weather insulation, a fur-lined hood, and a cigarette/utility pocket on the left sleeve—which had a significant influence on flight jackets of later generations.
This particular piece is an early N-2B from the 1950s contract.
The hood features the N-2 series’ signature design, which allows it to be spread to the left and right by opening the central zipper. The short length and voluminous silhouette, designed with use in the confined space of an aircraft in mind, make for a striking presence even by today’s fashion standards.
The original U.S. AIR FORCE insignia on the left sleeve remains clearly visible, making this piece more than just a vintage outerwear item—it fully captures the authentic atmosphere of flight wear that was actually used by the USAF.
Condition: Used. It shows signs of wear that indicate it was actually worn, and there are areas around the zipper where the nylon has discolored to a reddish hue. This is a natural aging process unique to sage green flight jackets of this era, giving it a distinctly vintage look that a brand-new jacket could never achieve.
The ribbing has holes throughout that appear to be from moth damage or snags, and there is a small hole on the right sleeve. There are also other signs of wear appropriate for its age, such as stains, scuffs, and discoloration; however, it is not in a condition that makes it difficult to wear. As an early N-2B that has endured nearly 70 years, it is a piece you can still enjoy while putting it to practical use.
Unlike pieces that are too pristine, this N-2B exudes the raw power of a flight jacket as a “well-worn tool.” Featuring early sage green, a MEDIUM size, and the fading and wear resulting from actual use, this is an exceptionally appealing piece for fans of vintage USAF gear.
