This is a Nomex-fabric pilot's jacket used by the U.S. military from the Vietnam War era through the early 1970s.
Replacing the cotton flight wear of the past, this model introduced flame-resistant Nomex fabric and was worn by helicopter pilots and others. While it is flight gear, it features a relatively simple design characterized by practical construction, such as the placement of pockets. Its functional beauty, stripped of all unnecessary elements, holds an appeal that resonates with modern military wear.
A U.S. Army division patch remains on the left shoulder, a detail that suggests the jacket was actually in service. Furthermore, the front is equipped with a GRIPPER zipper typical of the era, firmly preserving its vintage atmosphere.
Although the tag is missing, making it impossible to verify the exact contract or size, the details and fabric texture suggest this piece dates from the late 1960s to the early 1970s.
Signs of wear and dirt are visible throughout, and there is age-related discoloration around the collar and on the inside from repeated wear. However, it is precisely this patina from actual use that is this piece’s greatest charm. The character left behind after years of service possesses a realism that new items or replicas can never replicate.
This piece belongs to the early generation of Nomex-equipped flight gear, an essential part of any discussion of Vietnam War-era flight gear. While it may not be flashy, it is a garment that allows you to fully appreciate the unique presence and history of an authentic piece.
