ERDL (Engineer Research & Development Laboratory) camouflage is one of the essential camouflage patterns when discussing the Vietnam War. This item is an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) M59 field shirt made from U.S. military-issued ERDL ripstop fabric.

The M59 was a field uniform unique to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), bearing strong influences from French military equipment, and was widely worn by elite units such as the Ranger units (BDQ) and airborne units.It is also well known that U.S. military advisors and special forces personnel operating alongside the ARVN frequently procured and used these shirts locally, and they remain highly popular as one of the iconic locally made pieces of equipment from the Vietnam War.

Its defining feature is a combat-ready design that combines the South Vietnamese Army’s unique M59 style with U.S. Army ERDL ripstop fabric. The lightweight and highly durable ripstop fabric was developed with jungle combat in mind, and the print—with dye beautifully penetrating even to the reverse side—offers a charm found only in authentic pieces.

ERDL camouflage is also a historic pattern that served as the prototype for the later Woodland camouflage; as a pattern used only for a limited period in the late 1960s, it is highly regarded by collectors worldwide.

This item is an actual, field-used piece, and shows signs of wear, aging, and button deterioration throughout. However, the fabric itself remains sturdy, making this a charming piece that strongly retains the distinctive character of equipment that has seen real combat.
