A tiger-stripe shirt, commonly known as the “Late War Lightweight Pattern,” which appeared during the latter half of the Vietnam War. The size stamp reads “M.” In terms of size, it is equivalent to a US size M.

Among the many tiger-stripe shirts in existence, this pattern is known as a late-war variant that, as the name suggests, uses a thin, lightweight fabric. Designed with the hot and humid climate of Southeast Asia in mind, it features an exceptionally light and airy feel and is one of the tiger-stripe shirts seen from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. It is believed to have been manufactured in South Korea.

The greatest appeal of this particular shirt is, without a doubt, its exceptionally deep, dark coloration for a Late War piece.

Set against a base of deep, nearly black stripes, layers of olive green and brown tones create the intense contrast characteristic of tiger stripes. While many Late War examples have faded significantly to a light green due to wear and washing, this piece—though showing some overall fading—is a beautiful specimen in which the dark tones remain remarkably vivid.

Another key feature not to be overlooked is the size.

This item is stamped “M” and, in terms of actual measurements, is a relatively large size equivalent to a US MEDIUM.When it comes to vintage tiger-stripe items, there are a great many smaller pieces—particularly those with an “Asian Cut”—so options that are comfortable to wear by modern standards are quite limited. In that regard, this piece is an attractive item that can be considered not only for a collection but also for actual wear.

The details—such as the large chest pockets positioned on both sides and the double-buttoned flaps—give it a distinctly military look characteristic of tiger-stripe designs. The jacket has a substantial length, and combined with the lightweight fabric, it offers a silhouette that can be enjoyed much like a shirt jacket.

Looking at the lining, you’ll find a plain olive fabric used extensively—a stark contrast to the outer fabric—and the simple, practical construction unique to vintage pieces is another intriguing aspect. You can even appreciate the authentic vintage stitching and construction that aren’t immediately apparent from the exterior.

Even though Tiger Stripe jackets are grouped under the same pattern name, the way the color fades varies significantly depending on the region of manufacture, fabric, dye, production lot, and conditions of use. That’s precisely why each piece is unique—down to “how the color has aged” and “how much of the original color remains.”

This piece is a particularly attractive example: it retains the light, airy feel of a “Late War Lightweight” fabric while still maintaining its dark tones, and it’s sized equivalent to a US MEDIUM.

I highly recommend this piece to anyone looking for a vintage Tiger Stripe jacket to actually wear, as well as to collectors who enjoy tracking variations in patterns and color tones.

This is a used item. While there is some slight fading overall due to age and wear, no noticeable stains, major damage, or repair marks are currently visible. Considering its age, it’s in excellent condition with great character.

Please note that returns are not accepted for used items.
