The G-1 is the iconic flight jacket of the U.S. Navy. Among them, this particular piece is an exceptionally attractive early model of SPEC 55J14(AER).Featuring thick yet supple goatskin, rich brown leather, and a beautiful shearling collar, this is a rare piece said to be the first SPEC No. to bear the name “G-1.” While it is already a masterpiece of military jacket design at this stage, the true value of this particular jacket lies in its “patches.”
On the chest, you can see the VT-17 (Torpedo Squadron) squadron patch, and in the center, the Seventh Fleet Task Force 77 (dated 1962) cruise patch. At the time, Task Force 77 was the core combat force of the U.S. Navy in the Western Pacific, operating out of bases in Japan (Yokosuka and Okinawa), the Philippines, and Hong Kong. It was truly the fleet that held the front lines during the Cold War.On the sleeves, several patches related to the USS BENNINGTON (CVS-20) can be seen, including those indicating the 1960–61 “Far East Cruise” and emblems symbolizing the ship’s identity. It is also very important to note that these are all originals from that era and not later customizations.
Furthermore, particularly noteworthy is the 1962 Japanese 50-yen coin attached to the zipper pull. Given the context of the ship’s affiliation with the Seventh Fleet, it is believed to have been acquired during a port call in Japan and subsequently added as a personal customization, which aligns perfectly with the age of the patches. Such details serve as “living proof” that truly tells the story of a real soldier’s time and actions.
The nameplate reads “B.F. SHIELDS / LT / USN(R).” Additionally, the name tape—which was reattached at a later date—bears the USNR (U.S. Naval Reserve) designation; however, the faded color of the “R” suggests that the wearer was recalled to active duty after having served in the reserves. This jacket was worn throughout the owner’s naval career and is truly a “garment imbued with personal history.”Given its background—having been released at an estate sale following the owner’s passing—it holds significant value as a collectible piece.
In terms of condition, while there are several tears in the lining and signs of wear throughout, the leather retains an exceptional patina and remains fully wearable. In fact, it is precisely this aging that brings out the true charm of authentic military gear. This is not just any G-1; it is a “garment that tells a story,” imbued with the history of the Seventh Fleet, deployments to the Far East, and the owner’s personal career. For those seeking the ultimate in authenticity.
