This camouflage jacket was locally tailored using repurposed Mitchell-pattern camouflage shelter half fabric formerly used by the U.S. Marine Corps. It is entirely different from standard-issue jackets; rather, it was independently crafted using issued military materials, making it a unique piece representative of its era.

 

While the exact date cannot be determined, based on its specifications and the materials used, it is estimated to date from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Furthermore, judging by the stitching and the overall feel of the components, it is likely that this piece was made in Japan or in Okinawa, where U.S. military bases were located.

Its greatest appeal, without a doubt, is the body, which makes generous use of Mitchell-pattern shelter halves.

The Mitchell pattern is one of the camouflage patterns synonymous with the U.S. military from the late 1950s onward and the Vietnam War; it left a particularly strong impression during the Vietnam War era, notably on helmet covers. The unique charm of this locally made piece lies in the fact that the fabric—originally intended for shelter halves—was taken apart, re-cut, and re-tailored into clothing.

In this piece, the “Leaf” side—which features a green base—is boldly placed on the outer side. Meanwhile, the inner side displays a brown-toned pattern, creating a stunning visual that makes it immediately clear this is a reversible camouflage fabric derived from a shelter half.

Furthermore, the fabric itself already exhibits significant fading and signs of wear.This condition suggests not only the natural aging that occurred while the jacket was worn but also the possibility that it was made from a shelter half that had already seen some use. The mix of whitish, worn-out green, faded brown, and deep prints remaining in places creates a stunning vintage look that’s nearly impossible to replicate with modern, processed fabrics.

On the chest, there’s a black stencil of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA) and “USMC.” Above that, you can also make out faint markings that appear to be the name of a former owner. These personal traces add to the garment’s charm as a locally made piece crafted from issue fabric.

The design is also superb.

The front features a zipper closure, with a YKK zipper. It has large patch pockets on both sides at the waist and flap pockets on the sleeves. It’s important to note that this isn’t simply a direct copy of a standard utility jacket; its unique construction is somewhat reminiscent of a hunting jacket.

How to cut an existing shelter half pattern and transform it into a single jacket—the irregular way the pattern falls, which seems to reflect that process of trial and error, is a hallmark of locally made items. Even if you tried to find another one exactly like it, you’d be unlikely to find one with the same cut or fade.

Around the time of the Vietnam War, soldiers used camouflage uniforms and locally tailored clothing that differed from standard-issue gear. Among these, the combination of the USMC, the Mitchell pattern, and locally made items is a highly sought-after category even in the vintage military market.

This is not just any camouflage jacket.

It was created when a U.S. military “Shelter Half”—a piece of military equipment—was repurposed as fabric and transformed into a garment by a local tailor. Furthermore, it retains the USMC stencil, traces of its previous owner, and years of fading—making it a piece that invites you to imagine the history of this very item.

It has an outstanding presence as a vintage piece. While it’s certainly great for everyday wear, this is a special piece I highly recommend to collectors of USMC, Vietnam War-era, and locally made items.


Condition: Used. Shows significant fading, scuffing, and signs of wear throughout. The shelter half used as the base material may have been previously used itself, and this piece has a very distinctive character, including these signs of aging.
