It holds a special place among U.S. military uniforms from World War II and is an indispensable part of the story of U.S. Army airborne units, including the 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division.
The jacket we’ve just received is a large size, estimated to be approximately a size 40–42 based on actual measurements. An original M-1942 of this size from that era is exceptionally appealing. Furthermore, the fact that it still features the original waist belt—which is often missing—is a detail not to be overlooked.
The M-1942 jumpsuit was developed as specialized combat attire for soldiers performing parachute drops at a time when the U.S. Army Airborne units themselves were still a relatively new phenomenon.Consisting of a jacket and trousers, it features large-capacity pockets that set it apart from standard infantry field uniforms. Its design left a powerful impression on U.S. airborne troops during World War II—notably during the Normandy landings—and had a significant influence on military wear in subsequent generations.
The jacket features a total of four large pleated pockets—two on the chest and two at the waist. Its unique, voluminous structure—designed to maximize storage capacity—and the diagonally positioned chest pockets give the M-1942 its unmistakable presence.From the epaulets on the shoulders, the deep action pleats on the back, the longer body length, to the matching fabric belt that cinches the waist, this jacket embodies the functional beauty characteristic of paratrooper uniforms.
The front primarily fastens with a zipper. This piece retains its vintage-style metal zipper, allowing you to fully appreciate the details unique to paratrooper gear from over 80 years ago.
But what’s most appealing of all is the size and overall vibe of this particular piece.
While any surviving M-1942 jump jacket is a collector’s item in its own right, larger sizes are even harder to find. Although we cannot confirm the size with certainty because the size label is illegible, based on the actual measurements, it is estimated to be around size 40–42. This is a rare piece that is not only suitable for display but also worth considering for actual wear by those who fit the size requirements.
The original label remains inside, though the text has become illegible due to age. While some pieces have lost the label entirely, the fact that traces of it remain adds to the charm unique to an original item.
The condition is used. It shows signs of aging appropriate for its age, including fading, scuffing, light soiling, partial stains, and frayed threads.Additionally, as shown in the photos, there is visible fabric wear and repair marks inside the pockets. On the other hand, the overall silhouette and key details of the jacket are well-preserved, making it a piece with excellent authenticity as an original WWII M-1942.
