Commonly known as “Chocolate Chip,” this U.S. Army desert camouflage pattern stands out with its overwhelming presence. This is an authentic U.S. Army 6-Color Desert Camouflage Combat Trousers from the 1986 contract. Estimated size: XL.

While the 6-Color Desert Camouflage became widely known during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, this item was procured earlier, in the mid-1980s. It offers a chance to appreciate the early-to-mid-period 6C Desert Camouflage, which has a distinct character compared to the versions from the later Gulf War era.

Its greatest appeal lies in the magnificent faded look developed through extensive wear. The strong contrast of the 6-Color Desert Camouflage when new has faded just enough, transforming the overall appearance into a pale, dry tone. The brown, tan, light green, and black-and-white “chocolate chip” patterns have blended together, resulting in a wonderful look characteristic of vintage military gear.

The details are also exceptionally well-crafted. It features large cargo pockets on both sides, as well as a back pocket, waist adjusters on both sides, and a drawcord at the hem. Furthermore, the three-dimensional paneling around the knees and hips—typical of field trousers—gives these pants the imposing presence unique to gear designed for actual combat.

These pants have a fairly generous fit, estimated to be around an XL. Since the size label is difficult to read, we recommend prioritizing the actual measurements; however, the silhouette is outstanding when worn wide to take full advantage of this generous size. The 6C Desert pattern itself stands out more prominently, creating a presence quite different from that of standard-sized pants.

The original 1980s 6C Desert is now more than just a pair of camouflage pants; it’s a vintage item that chronicles the evolution of U.S. military desert gear. In particular, pieces from the 1986 contract that have faded significantly possess a charm entirely distinct from deadstock items. I highly recommend this pair to anyone who appreciates the unique patina that only develops with wear.
