Furthermore, it features the early-production white label, rather than the later beige-toned label. Even within the MILITARIA 1911 collection, this is a rare piece that deserves to be presented as distinctly separate from standard “chocolate chip” BDU.
Commonly known as “Chocolate Chip,” the 6-Color Desert Camouflage was one of the first full-fledged desert camouflage patterns adopted by the U.S. military for operations in desert environments.Its most distinctive feature is a unique six-color composition based on tan, beige, and brown, dotted with small black and white rock-like patterns. Because these fine black-brown patterns resemble chocolate chips, the pattern became widely known by this nickname.
Although this camouflage later made a strong impression during the Gulf War, this item is from a 1981 contract—a much earlier stage in its history. Unlike pieces from the late ’80s to early ’90s, it truly captures the spirit of the era when “Chocolate Chip” camouflage first began to be deployed as U.S. military gear.
And the tag is not to be missed.
On the collar is a white size label marked “MEDIUM-SHORT.” The label

Furthermore, on the inside, a white instruction label remains, reading “COAT, COMBAT, CAMOUFLAGE PATTERN; DESERT.” It has a distinctly different feel from the beige-colored labels seen in later years and is a highly appealing detail unique to the very earliest “chocolate chip” models.
According to the label, the fabric is 50% COTTON / 50% NYLON. Featuring a practical design typical of the same era as the Woodland BDU, the front is equipped with four large flap pockets. The bold six-color desert pattern stands out beautifully against the loose-fitting body and straight silhouette.
The size is MEDIUM-SHORT. While it has the body width of a MEDIUM, the length and sleeve length are set to SHORT, making it a popular size that’s easy to incorporate into modern fashion. Its well-balanced fit—not too large, yet allowing you to fully appreciate the “chocolate chip” pattern’s presence—is another appealing feature.
Additionally, this item bears traces where patches were once removed. Stitching marks and some loose threads can be seen around the chest and sleeves, but these are unique characteristics of a BDU that has seen actual use. Even in its current state, it exudes a vintage charm, and the remaining threads are expected to gradually blend in and become less noticeable with repeated washing.
Overall, the garment shows signs of wear and some fading, and the “chocolate chip” color has developed a soft, worn-in look that you won’t find on a brand-new item.
