The L-2B is the quintessential Light Zone flight jacket of the U.S. Air Force. In addition to its classic specifications—manufactured by Alpha Industries under a 1970 contract—this particular jacket is a special piece that holds a “story” that goes beyond mere military history.
Its most distinctive feature is that it was actually worn by Bill Eveland during his time in the Air Force. Later in life, he became known as a traffic information personality who worked for many years in Sacramento, California, and was a highly recognizable figure in the local community. This jacket, worn during his Air Force days—which could be considered the starting point of his career—is truly a piece that embodies a part of his life.
A Strategic Air Command (SAC) patch can be seen on the left chest. SAC was the unit that served as the core of America’s nuclear deterrent during the Cold War, a critically important organization central to the operation of bombers and ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles). As this patch indicates, this jacket was not merely part of an air force unit but was used in an environment involving missions at the national strategic level.
On the right chest are the COL (Colonel) rank insignia and an “EVELAND” name patch. Additionally, rank insignia are attached to the shoulders, preserving a realistic detail that clearly indicates the wearer’s rank and unit at the time. An L-2B in such pristine condition with the wearer’s name still intact is extremely rare, making it highly valuable as a collector’s item. The zipper is made by SCOVILL, and the lining is a vibrant rescue orange. The nylon shell is in excellent condition with minimal damage to the ribbing, maintaining an outstanding state of preservation considering its age.
Beyond its military craftsmanship, this is a one-of-a-kind L-2B with a rich history that connects the career of a real person, the history of the Air Force during the Cold War, and its subsequent success in civilian life. We highly recommend this jacket to those seeking not just a flight jacket, but a piece with a story to tell. Please note that this is a used item and cannot be returned.
