This is a children’s-sized tour jacket (souvenir jacket) produced and sold during the Vietnam War. Influenced by Japan’s “sukajan” culture, these jackets were widely produced throughout Vietnam as souvenirs for soldiers, and this piece is a valuable example of that tradition.

The vivid hand embroidery on the black body is exceptionally charming. A tiger and the character for “luck” (福) are meticulously embroidered on the chest; a dragon and a tiger adorn the sleeves; and the back features the text “CHU-LAI VIET-NAM 1967” along with a map of South Vietnam. It is a masterpiece that vividly captures the atmosphere of that era, allowing you to appreciate the unique warmth and character of handcrafted work that machine embroidery simply cannot replicate.

The city names depicted on the back include Hue, Da Nang,Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau, Camau, and Saigon—a lineup of major military and supply hubs that defined South Vietnam in the 1960s.

Among these, Chu Lai was a key base where the U.S. Marine Corps built a large-scale facility in 1965, and by 1967, it had become a vital support hub for the front lines, serving as both an air base and a logistics hub.Da Nang was also home to one of the U.S. military’s largest air bases, while Hue is a historic city that became the site of fierce fighting during the Tet Offensive the following year, in 1968.Qui Nhon and Nha Trang served as hubs for supply and logistical support, while Vung Tau was known as a rest and recreation (R&R) destination for soldiers. Since the names of these cities are embroidered on a single piece, this item is believed to be a souvenir jacket sold in areas with heavy military traffic, such as around Saigon and Da Nang.

Such tour jackets were not only worn by the soldiers themselves but were also popular as gifts for family members. In particular, children’s sizes were often made as mementos for soldiers to bring back to their own children upon returning home. Against the backdrop of the war, these can be considered special souvenirs imbued with deep affection for family.

The aluminum zipper is the original from that era and still functions properly. Although it is a children’s size, the embroidery is of high quality, making it a piece of exceptional historical and collectible value. It is a fascinating item for discussing both Vietnam War souvenirs and the “sukajan” culture.
