This is a children’s-sized tour jacket (souvenir jacket) that was manufactured and sold locally during the Vietnam War. It is a souvenir unique to the Vietnam War, created under the influence of Japan’s “sukajan” culture, and is known as a memento that soldiers purchased to give to their families and children upon returning home.

The chest features hand-embroidered designs of a fierce tiger and the character for “luck” (福), while the back is adorned with the text “QUINHON VIETNAM 66” and a map of South Vietnam. The hand embroidery, created using vibrant colored threads, gives each piece a unique character, making this a charming garment that conveys the warmth of the craftsmanship of the artisans of that era.

Qui Nhon, depicted on the back, was one of Central Vietnam’s premier military strongholds in 1966, serving as a vital supply port and logistics base for both the U.S. and South Korean militaries. It was known as a strategically indispensable city, equipped with port facilities capable of accommodating large transport ships and serving as a hub for dispatching supplies and troops to surrounding areas.

The map is embroidered with place names symbolic of that era—such as Hanoi, Hue, Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Vung Tau, Camau, Laos, and Cambodia—creating a design characteristic of a Vietnam War souvenir that encapsulates memories of the battlefield in a single garment. These jackets were sold in cities with large concentrations of soldiers—such as Saigon, Da Nang, and Qui Nhon—as well as at PX stores and tailor shops throughout the city, and were highly popular as mementos of military service or as souvenirs to bring home.

Children’s sizes are rare today, making these jackets particularly special as they suggest they were brought home as gifts for family members. With a story distinct from the tour jackets worn by the soldiers themselves, this piece is a highly appealing collector’s item.

Condition

While there are signs of wear consistent with its age, the fabric and embroidery are in good condition. The aluminum zipper on the front is broken, so the jacket cannot be zipped closed. Additionally, there are minor stains and scuffs due to age, but this piece fully captures the charm of a vintage item.

Please note that this is a used item and cannot be returned.
