The N-1 deck jacket, which was first introduced during World War II, remains overwhelmingly popular today as the U.S. Navy’s iconic cold-weather garment.
The N-1 was adopted around 1943 and was developed for sailors on duty on the freezing-cold deck.Featuring a high-density cotton jungle cloth shell combined with an alpaca-blend lining, it offered exceptional cold-weather protection. It remained in service not only during the Pacific War but also after the war, undergoing continuous improvements until the 1950s.Although the alpaca blend ratio and minor specifications were adjusted in later years, its refined design is still highly regarded today as a masterpiece of military jackets.
This jacket is believed to be from a production lot dating from the very end of the 1950s.
Handwritten “CVA-62” can be seen on the back. CVA-62 is the hull number of the USS Independence, a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier that entered service on January 10, 1959.It entered service as one of the world’s first supercarriers and served on the front lines for a long time, from the Cold War through the Vietnam War. Considering the ship’s hull number and commissioning date, this jacket is a particularly fascinating piece, as it dates from the very final period of N-1 jacket use.This is a highly significant artifact that demonstrates how the N-1, which originated during World War II, continued to be used by the Navy even into the jet age and the era of supercarriers.

is handwritten. “OPS” is believed to refer to the ship’s Operations department, and the jacket strongly retains the atmosphere of its actual use during onboard duty.
Another appealing feature is that the unit assignment on the tag is handwritten rather than stamped, as was common during World War II.
It is equipped with a TALON zipper, and the leather zipper pull is still intact. The zipper operates smoothly.While there are signs of actual use throughout, such as fading and stains, the alpaca lining shows minimal wear, and the jacket remains in excellent condition for a piece of this era. Although it shows signs of use, it is in a practical condition that allows you to continue enjoying wearing it for years to come.
