This is the C-1 Survival Vest, adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II for aircraft crew members.

Worn by crew members of bombers and transport aircraft, it was developed as part of a survival system designed to allow them to carry a full set of survival gear in the event of a crash or emergency landing in enemy territory or uncharted terrain.Its distinctive design, featuring a large opening at the back, was intended for use in conjunction with a parachute harness and flight jacket, making it truly a piece of equipment unique to aircrew.

Its greatest appeal lies in the fact that each of its numerous pockets is clearly labeled with its intended use. Labels such as “FIRST AID,” “HAT,” “GLOVES,” and “GAFF ASSEMBLY” directly indicate the equipment to be stored, and even today, one can sense the design philosophy that was thoroughly optimized for practicality.At the time, these pockets held first-aid supplies, signaling equipment, knives, gloves, food, fishing gear, and more—all essential items designed to increase the crew’s chances of survival.
