A highly specialized reversible ski parka adopted by the U.S. Army during World War II for operations in mountainous and snowy regions.

Although this model is commonly referred to as the “M-1942 Reversible Ski Parka” or “M-1942 Snow Parka,” the official designation listed on the Quartermaster tags of the time was “PARKA, SKI, REVERSIBLE / FUR TRIMMED.”Authentic examples manufactured in 1942 still exist today, bearing markings such as “Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot,” “P.Q.D. No. 201,” and “Stock No. 55-P-4906.”

A defining feature of this parka is its fully reversible design in olive drab and white.

It is typically worn with the olive drab side facing out, but in snowy areas, it is turned inside out to use the white side. Made of two layers of cotton poplin, this wind- and snow-resistant outerwear is a pullover/anorak style that is pulled over the head.Natural fur trim around the hood provides protection for the face during blizzards and strong winds, making it an extremely practical design. Documents from the 10th Mountain Division also list the reversible ski parka as a central piece of ski gear.

Particularly well-known is its association with the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division.

This division was a unit that underwent specialized training for mountain warfare and used specialized equipment designed for skiing, mountaineering, and operations in cold climates.Among the surviving “PARKA, SKI, REVERSIBLE” parkas manufactured in 1942, there is an actual piece that can be traced back to an officer in the 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division.

This is not merely a “white parka for the snow.” It is a garment that embodies the very era when the U.S. Army was exploring full-fledged mountain warfare gear.

What’s particularly interesting about this specific piece is its detailing.

Among the well-known authentic 1942 models, some have been confirmed to feature a three-button collar and a longer overall length.

In contrast, this particular item features a double-breasted, six-button closure at the neck.

Furthermore, compared to the typical long-length versions, the body length of this piece is shorter. Historical records confirm that multiple variations of parkas for mountain units existed during this period, making this item particularly intriguing as an example showcasing such design differences.

While retaining the basic concept of a pullover-style jacket without a front zipper, the collar with its six buttons in a row is a standout design feature. Even as military wear, it is quite unique; it possesses a distinct presence characteristic of early 1940s mountain gear, setting it apart entirely from the field parkas of later years.

The hood still retains a substantial amount of natural fur.The combination of long-pile brown fur and the olive drab (OD) shell is what defines the look of this parka. The actual 1942 parka also bears the label “FUR TRIMMED,” confirming that this was not merely a decorative element but a crucial detail designed to protect the face from wind and snow in cold climates.

Furthermore, turning it inside out completely changes the impression.

The white side, having aged for over 70 years, is no longer pure white but has developed a beautiful, sun-bleached hue ranging from cream to beige. This vintage-specific tone—one that could never be achieved with brand-new white fabric—allows you to enjoy it as a garment entirely distinct from the OD side.

The duality of the OD and snow camo sides is striking on its own, but the fact that the white side has aged to this color makes it incredibly appealing even from a modern fashion perspective.

During World War II, it was used not only by the 10th Mountain Division but also by units such as the First Special Service Force; it is believed to have later been issued to other U.S. Army units as cold-weather gear.

It has also been noted that the length of the early-model long ski parkas could sometimes be a hindrance during actual combat operations, and there are examples of them being modified to a shorter length. Mountain gear underwent repeated improvements over a short period, and tracking the variations in specifications unique to this era is part of what makes this category so fascinating.

This item is in used condition.

Overall, it shows relatively little wear and is in a very attractive condition considering its age. However, repair marks are visible near the base of the neck. Additionally, the white side shows sun fading and discoloration due to age, and its current color is closer to cream or beige. Please understand that this is a functional item from over 80 years ago.

Above all, it features a reversible OD and snow camo design, natural fur, a pullover construction, and a 6-button configuration that clearly differs from the more common 3-button style.

This is a special piece that can be appreciated not only for its vintage appeal but also for its background as “equipment specifically designed for mountain warfare,” developed through trial and error by the U.S. military during World War II.

It belongs to a lineage entirely distinct from famous U.S. military parkas such as the M-43, M-51, and M-65. As a garment that symbolizes the 10th Mountain Division, WWII Mountain Troops, and ski/mountain gear, it is a highly collectible vintage piece.
